چکیده

Pulse pressure (PP) is defined as the difference between systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Physiologically, both pressures increase throughout life due to the increase of stroke volume and/or peripheral vascular resistance (PVR). In the sixth decade of age, the PP increases with increasing SBP and decreasing DBP due to an increase of arterial stiffness [1]. The PP increase also leads to higher pulse wave velocity (PWV). Both PP and PWV are important independent prognostic markers of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality [2]. The older people are, the more they are at risk of cardiovascular events, and the high prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension accompanied by a wide pulse pressure seems to be one of the most important factors [3].

Relationship between some indices of cardiovascular functions and pulse pressure as a predictor index for heart diseases: a case-control study

Background: Pulse pressure has recently been considered as a predictor of coronary heart disease. The difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure is called pulse pressure. Various factors including increased age, vascular stiffness, stenosis, and hypertension are associated with pulse pressure. The present study, therefore, aimed to investigate the relationship between some cardiov...

The rationale/design of the Guimarães/Vizela study: a multimodal population-based cohort study to determine global cardiovascular risk and disease.

BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease and dementia are growing medical and social problems in aging societies. Appropriate knowledge of cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline risk factors (RFs) are critical for global CVR health preventive intervention. Many epidemiological studies use case definition based on data collected/measured in a single visit, a fact that can overestimate prevalence ...

Potential Effect of Opium Consumption on Controlling Diabetes and Some Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Diabetic Patients

Background: Due to this belief that opium may have beneficial effects on diabetes or cardiovascular risk factors, the present study aimed to assess the potential and possible effects of opium consumption on diabetes control and some cardiovascular risk factors in diabetic patients. Methods: This study enrolled 374 diabetic subjects from diabetes care centers in Kerman, Iran including opium user...

Hemodynamic Aging as the Consequence of Structural Changes Associated with Early Vascular Aging (EVA).

An increase in peripheral vascular resistance at rest is not routinely observed in healthy older persons, but often associated with increased stiffness of central elastic arteries, as hallmarks of aging effects on the vasculature, referred to as early vascular aging (EVA). In clinical practice, the increased arterial stiffness translates into increased brachial and central systolic blood pressu...
